Lighting conditions were changing fast that morning. Thus, another take on Niagara's Horseshoe Falls.
While attending a wedding on California’s central coast, I snuck away for a bit of Pelican watching at Pismo Beach. Watching these unwieldy Birds dive at breakneck speed into the Pacific Ocean (to catch a fish) makes for an interesting morning… but I’m easy to please : )
The Brown Pelican is a comically elegant bird with an oversized bill, sinuous neck, and big, dark body. Squadrons glide above the surf along southern and western coasts, rising and falling in a graceful echo of the waves.
They feed by plunge-diving from high up, using the force of impact to stun small fish before scooping them up. They are fairly common today—an excellent example of a species’ recovery from pesticide pollution that once placed them at the brink of extinction.
While the Brown Pelican is draining the water from its bill after a dive, gulls often try to steal the fish right out of its pouch—sometimes while perching on the pelican's head. Pelicans themselves are not above stealing fish, as they follow fishing boats and hang around piers for handouts.
Pelicans incubate their eggs with the skin of their feet, essentially standing on the eggs to keep them warm. In the mid-twentieth century the pesticide DDT caused pelicans to lay thinner eggs that cracked under the weight of incubating parents. After nearly disappearing from North America in the 1960s and 1970s, Brown Pelicans made a full comeback thanks to pesticide regulations.
During a dive, the Brown Pelican tucks its head and rotates its body to the left. This maneuver is probably to cushion the trachea and esophagus—which are found on the right side of the neck—from the impact.
The oldest Brown Pelican on record was 43 years of age.

Asian rhinos, in contrast to their African counterparts, possess a distinctive and heavily armored appearance, owing to the numerous folds in their skin. These magnificent creatures are herbivores, primarily feeding on a diet consisting of tall grasses, shrubs, leaves, and fruits. As they graze, they play a significant role in shaping and restructuring the landscapes they inhabit. However, the unfortunate truth is that some Asian rhinoceros species are on the brink of extinction.
Vietnam's last Javan rhinos, a critically endangered subspecies, tragically became extinct in 2010. One of the most pressing threats to these remarkable animals is poaching. Rhinoceroses are mercilessly hunted by poachers for their horns, which fetch exorbitant prices on the black market. East Asia, particularly Vietnam, stands out as the largest market for rhino horns.
Rhino horns, despite being composed of keratin, the same protein found in hair and fingernails, are coveted for their supposed therapeutic properties. Some cultures grind these horns into dust and consume it as traditional medicine or use it for ornamental purposes. Astonishingly, the price of rhino horns, when measured by weight, can rival that of gold on the black market.
Among Asian rhino species, both African species and the Sumatran rhinoceros possess two horns, while the Indian and Javan rhinoceros have a single horn. Regrettably, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List categorizes the black rhinoceros, Javan rhinoceros, and Sumatran rhinoceros as critically endangered, highlighting the urgent need for conservation efforts to protect these magnificent creatures from extinction.
The Eurasian lynx, one of Europe's largest predators, has bounced back from the brink of extinction in Europe but it is still critically endangered in some areas.
The Eurasian Lynx is the largest lynx species, and has one of the widest ranges of any wild cat.
The increasing urbanization of western Europe, and the resulting loss of habitat and diminished prey base, have led to a severe reduction of the Eurasian Lynx population there.
Escalating deforestation, persecution as stock killers, and illegal poaching remain major threats to their future. They are heavily trapped for the fur trade across their range, and legally hunted in Sweden, Norway, Finland, Estonia and Latvia.
Reintroduction programs have taken place in Switzerland, Slovenia, the Czech Republic, Austria, Germany, Italy and France. Studies have shown that Eurasian Lynx are quick to rebound if hunting pressures are lessened, and protected areas with good prey bases are set aside.

The Lower Yellowstone River Falls in Yellowstone National Park. This is from Lookout Point. People can be seen on the Brink of Lower Yellowstone Falls at the scenic overlook at the top right of the falls. They look tiny but they're there. These falls are higher than Niagara Falls but not as wide. This is close to Canyon Village where they have restaurants and lodging. The walk to Lookout Point is short there are some stairs though. To me this is the highlight of Yellowstone National Park. The Upper and Lower Yellowstone Falls are only a couple miles apart. If you're in good shape you can venture down into the canyon on Uncle Tom's Trail. It's 328 steps down the .4 mile trail and a 500 foot drop. It leads to a viewing platform just below the Upper Yellowstone Falls and gives a beautiful view of the falls from inside the canyon. It was closed for maintenance when I was there. #NPS #YellowstoneNationalPark #LowerYellowstoneFalls #waterfalls #cascades #Wasserfälle #nature #Natur #outdoors #hiking #randonnée #Wandern #滝

"Choose What You Love Most (Let It Kill You)"
Was in a place where I wished for the love of my life
I've suffered more in these arms and I thought I would die
And now I tremble on the brink like a shivering child
Praying not to fall, if it hurts it will be worth a flight
If I blow it, I'll know it
I'll face it with my open broken heart and my wiser eyes
If I blow it so goes in
I won't regret a thing I did, just the things I didn't try
Choose what you love most, and let it kill you
If you have to
Choose what you love most, and let it kill you
And let it kill you
My freedom wasted to surrender and give you my life
I feel that I'm over my head but I'm taking the dive
I'll take a breath with your kiss of death, if I survive
I knew with the next breath I'm immortalized
If I blow it, I'll know it
I'll face it with my open broken heart and my wiser eyes
If I blow it so goes in
I won't regret a thing I did, just the things I didn't try
Choose what you love most, and let it kill you
If you have to
Choose what you love most, and let it kill you
Let it kill you
And let it kill you
Let it kill you
Choose what you love most, and let it kill you
Let it kill you
Let it kill you
Let it kill you

“Together we all live every moment On the very brink; The razor’s edge Of ecstasy or disaster.” - quote by Scott Hastie
You may think there's nothing unusual about seeing sheep grazing on the Isle of Wight but some are a little bit different. Let me introduce you to the black sheep in the National Trust family...
History
Hebridean sheep are an ancient breed of medium-sized black sheep, which came from the islands off the west coast of Scotland. They're often known as St Kilda sheep.
The first feral animals, small and hardy with hair coats, were domesticated by Iron-Age farmers. Their thick black fleece is a result of selective breeding, and it turns greyer with age.
Had it not been fashionable to keep them in the parkland of country estates, they may well have died out.
But in the 20th century they were brought back from the brink of extinction and now they're widely used by conservation organisations.
The National Trust first bought them in the early 1990s from an Isle of Wight rare breed farm.
What makes them special?
They chose Hebridean sheep because they're excellent at scrub control, preferring to browse coarse vegetation rather than flowers such as orchids and cowslips.
And they'll happily eat docks, thistle flowers and nettles.
They're a low-maintenance breed and are hardy – they don’t seem to mind bad weather conditions or a poor diet, unlike some other breeds.
So They use them to restore and maintain areas of chalk grassland where we want to encourage the return of delicate wildflowers. They're also effective in restoring lowland heath, where they reduce the scrub that shades the heather.
How do They use them?
They move the sheep around quite a bit, using small flocks in places that are too small or unsuitable for cattle.
So you may often see them grazing on St Helens Common, at Bembridge Windmill, on Culver Down and Ventnor Downs, and alongside the Tennyson Trail at Freshwater Bay.
They also help maintain sites owned by the Wildlife Trust such as Bouldnor Heath Forest. We've a small breeding flock at Newtown and Clamerkin, which provides replacements for the ‘satellite’ flocks.
Caring for Their sheep
Their rangers and volunteers are responsible for looking after the sheep and moving them around the Isle of Wight to wherever they're needed.
They shear them in early spring to reduce the risk of ticks and fly-strike, a particularly unpleasant condition that occurs in hot, wet conditions.
But, generally, they're quite self sufficient, enjoying the environment and playing an important part in our family.

At the brink of blue hour, this afterburner sunset lit up the Metro Vancouver ( south/west ) sky for New Year's Day/Evening.
The image was captured at Steveston's Harbour.
Richmond, British Columbia Canada
The colours were so intense that my camera's sensor had trouble reading the sky.
People were absolutely mesmerized by this surprise light show that took to the sky.
The sunset magically appeared in hues of intense pink, purple, orange and yellow. A colourful contrast to the blue hour.
It had been drizzling light rain and the sky grew dark, turning into a typical winter's night, when out of no where appears this NEW YEAR encore.
I had to drop the saturation during processing, however the image still remains vibrantly coloured and lit.
Happy 2020 !

The city was formed along the Thure river, in the midst of peat swamps. This river was a branch of the river Dubbel and ran approximately near the current Bagijnhof. In 1049 the first reference to Dordrecht was made. Count Dirk IV was murdered that year near "Thuredrech".
Dordrecht was granted city rights by William I, Count of Holland, in 1220, making it the oldest city in Holland.
In 1253 a Latin school was founded in Dordrecht. It still exists today as the Johan de Witt Gymnasium and is the oldest gymnasium in the Netherlands. From 1600 to 1615 Gerhard Johann Vossius was rector at this school.
On 17th April 1421, the Saint Elisabeth's flood drowned large parts of southern Holland, causing Dordrecht to become an island. Over 100,000 people died in the flood.
Because of its strategic location the city developed into an important market city. It traded primarily in wine, wood, and cereals.
In 1572, representatives of all Dutch cities gathered in Dordrecht to declare their independence from Spain and acknowledge William of Orange as the leader of the fledgling Dutch state, marking the beginning of the Eighty Years War.
In 1618/1619, an important church meeting took place, called the Synod of Dordrecht, settling a theological dispute between the orthodox Calvinists and the liberal Arminians that had brought the country on the brink of civil war. The Arminians were defeated, resulting in the formulation of the Dordrecht Confession of Faith.
From 1780 to 1787, Dordrecht was home to the Patriots faction which intended to remove the hereditary Stadtholder position held by the House of Orange-Nassau. The Netherlands was after all a republic de jure. Soon after, more cities followed and William V fled from Holland. But his brother-in-law, King Frederick William II of Prussia, came to the aid of William V and on 18 September 1787, Dordrecht capitulated to Prussian troops. The Patriots were defeated and Willem V was restored in his position as Stadtholder.
In the 18th century, the importance of Dordrecht began to wane, and Rotterdam became the main city in the region.

Happy Independence Day – The Fourth Of July
The bald eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) is a bird of prey found in North America. A sea eagle, it has two known subspecies and forms a species pair with the white-tailed eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla). Its range includes most of Canada and Alaska, all of the contiguous United States, and northern Mexico. It is found near large bodies of open water with an abundant food supply and old-growth trees for nesting.
The bald eagle is an opportunistic feeder which subsists mainly on fish, which it swoops down and snatches from the water with its talons. It builds the largest nest of any North American bird and the largest tree nests ever recorded for any animal species, up to 4 m (13 ft) deep, 2.5 m (8.2 ft) wide, and 1 metric ton (1.1 short tons) in weight. Sexual maturity is attained at the age of four to five years.
Bald eagles are not actually bald; the name derives from an older meaning of the word, "white headed". The adult is mainly brown with a white head and tail. The sexes are identical in plumage, but females are about 25 percent larger than males. The beak is large and hooked. The plumage of the immature is brown.
The bald eagle is the national bird of the United States of America. The bald eagle appears on its seal. In the late 20th century, it was on the brink of extirpation in the contiguous United States. Populations have since recovered and the species was removed from the U.S. government's list of endangered species on July 12, 1995, and transferred to the list of threatened species. It was removed from the List of Endangered and Threatened Wildlife in the Lower 48 States on June 28, 2007. – Wikipedia
Back in the late 1960's, only 3,700 Trumpeter Swans remained and were on the brink of extinction. Efforts began to save these beautiful birds, which now number 63,000+. It's a real success story, which proves with proper stewardship we can save a species.
This pond is a nursery for Trumpeter Swans. The calm waters provide a safe place for cygnets to grow. Not to mention, it has wonderful views of the mountains. Not a bad place to begin life!
..I'll be on your side forevermore.

To all the fathers, to all the fatherly figures, who take a child to the brink of their own self discovery, and stand by them.....firm, constant, committed.
Who guide them to adulthood and their own journey.
To my dad.
You left us within a year of mom.
I can still see you sitting there quietly, so ill, with tears in your eyes. And saying "It's not for me. I know I'm going to be with your mother. I just hate to do this to you and your brother again"
What you "did" was love us.
Heroically.
Now you and mom live together in me. You are my compass.
So to all the heroes out there who love with that unwavering endurance, that unspoken depth......this day is for you.
Thank you.
Happy Father's Day. :-)
Looking down on those looking down from the viewing platform as the Yellowstone river rushes over the brink. It is a thrill to stand there. I can still hear her roar.
"The canyon’s colors were created by hot water acting on volcanic rock. It was not these colors, but the river’s yellow banks at its distant confluence with the Missouri River, that occasioned the Minnetaree Indian name which French trappers translated as roche jaune, yellow stone." Yellowstone.net
I wrongly thought the river was named from the striking yellow/gold/orange colors in the Canyon, not due to similar colors hundreds of miles away.
Thank you for taking the time to take a look and for any comments, faves and suggestions.
Have a wonderful week!

After 2 agonizing years we are finally off to Portugal once again ... I bring this photo forward from a previous trip to head up my photostream until our return. It will be good to see Rosa's family after all this time. Wish us safe travels if you might - I shall catch up with all of your fine photography on our return. Cheers, Michael

It was a good test of my cameras ability to withstand rain ... and it passed the test with aplomb. I took a number of photos (see first comment box) but the one above is my personal favourite of the day. There is something about the irony of the message embedded in the graffiti and the position of his umbrella and the 'don't walk' signal. Even the leaping jaguar on his bag seems to fit. Cheers!

'Enigma'
Yes, and that.
We are many things
And not others.
Our caste, our genes, experiences
A mystery to ourselves
Painted false colours in reminisces
And some forget to be conscious
And prefer the dullness of
Satiation of eye and ear
Until death closes them.
To live is pain and joy and beauty
And grief and light and the dark.
Slivers of truth were meant to
Mark purpose and make it
Worth the effort.
To decorate our essence.
Who can extract a man from his extremes
When he thinks he is right?
Who can extract a man
From his vices
When his vices speak loudest?
Who can save a nation
From its ruin
Whilst the few wield their
Dire damages
On the many who march in stupid file
To another brink.
I am at times vortex, my anger spinning
Until it plays out
I am at other times friend,
Able to forgive as I have been forgiven.
May I always be conscious.

The brink vantage point at waterfalls is always a cool experience. One can get a real visceral response to the power of the water. This one is the Upper Tahquamenon Falls in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, a real gem. The color comes from tannic acid leaching out of surrounding cedar swamps, aided by late morning sun. This was taken today, May 12, 2021.

A Jealopus is a cross between a companion and a guardian to the Merfolk. Although historically the creature was quite abundant in the ancient seas, they're very rare now. Human over-fishing and hunting has brought the Jealopus to the brink of extinction.
A Jealopus is CREATURE OF YOUR MIND (my mind, in this instance.) SUCH a word like JEALOPUS doesn't exist, it was invented by someone (Gitu's) typing mistake when she was addressing something to Jero (cute guy.)
Apologies for that oversight. Here's a succinct version:
In the city's embrace, she hangs between night and day, her back against the abyss. The glow of urban lights paints her silhouette, a portrait of longing and solitude. Amidst the sensation of falling, she finds solace, a fleeting moment of peace in the chaos. In this precarious perch, hope flickers, a reminder of resilience in the darkness. As she teeters on the edge, she discovers the courage to rise, a phoenix in the city's shadows.

P.S. So after Bambi started the Steampunk fever. I swear, all I told her was just make the Spirit of Nostalgia... Crazy Redheads had to infect me. I did the outfit which was in the other photo and I felt lost because with an outfit, you needed a room, right? I mean how can you NOT have a steampunk inspired area to feel at peace with. So I made an office and of course it had to have items from Contraption, 8f8 and Remarkable Oblivion (Just my creepy dolls, I take them everywhere.. :p They want to say hello.)
As I built this room, I also met my new favorite pet (I don't think he likes it when I call him a pet.) He is the 3 eyed handsome spider shaped robot in the corner there warning the dolls to behave, did you spot him? (Of course an awesome creation by Contraption!)

(I died laughing on that last one!!)
Trivia: I took this photo on low settings, I did not even edit it or retouch it in Photoshop. I used one of those Sci Fi windlights, I think it turned out so nice after messing with the Sky settings and shadow settings!
Deventer
Deventer is a lovely city with a historic downtown, with centered the Brink, a long market square bordered by trees and terraces. It is the largest city square in the Netherlands.
Deventer is one of the five oldest cities in the Netherlands. The place is already mentioned in 9th century sources of the diocese of Utrecht. A charter from 877 mentions seven hoeven (farmer's house and premises) in Daventre portu (the harbor at Deventer). The city rights of Deventer are probably really officially recorded sometime in the 11th century but this is not exactly known.

Hanseatic League
The Hanseatic League (also known as the Hanse or Hansa; Low German: Hanse, Dudesche Hanse, Latin: Hansa, Hansa Teutonica or Liga Hanseatica) was a commercial and defensive confederation of merchant guilds and their market towns that dominated trade along the coast of Northern Europe. It stretched from the Baltic to the North Sea and inland during the Late Middle Ages and early modern period (c. 13th to 17th centuries).
The League was created to protect economic interests and diplomatic privileges in the cities and countries and along the trade routes the merchants visited. The Hanseatic cities had their own legal system and furnished their own armies for mutual protection and aid. Despite this, the organization was not a city-state, nor can it be called a confederation of city-states; only a very small number of the cities within the league enjoyed autonomy and liberties comparable to those of a free imperial city.
The legacy of the Hansa is remembered today in several names, for example the German airline Lufthansa (i.e., "Air Hansa"), F.C. Hansa Rostock, the Hanze University of Applied Sciences, Groningen, in the Netherlands, the Hansa Brewery in Bergen, the Hansabank in Baltic states (now known as Swedbank) and the Hanse Sail in Rostock. DDG Hansa was a major German shipping company from 1881 until its bankruptcy in 1980.

This is a combination of a "drive by shooting" and ICM. We were coming back from Chilliwack (my blueberry field image), flying by on the highway, when I saw these skyscrapers in Burnaby, with bare trees in front of them. I could see in my mind's eye what I wanted to get, quickly changed my settings, and as the car sped horizontally, I moved my camera up and down quickly and squiggled it a bit too, also very quickly. Is that technical enough for you? :)
It was a dark, rainy kind of day and I didn't have to desaturate the image - this is how it turned out - just what I was envisioning.
I thought this a good shot to show the relative size of the Ross's goose.
From Audubon.org:
"This pint-sized relative of the Snow Goose has been surrounded by mystery and surprise. Explorers recognized it as a different bird as early as 1770, but it was not described to science until 1861; its Arctic nesting grounds were not discovered until 1938. Once thought to be very rare, or even on brink of extinction, its population has greatly increased in recent decades. Not until the late 1970s was it discovered that Ross's, like Snow Goose, can occur in a "blue" morph. Blue Ross's Geese are still rarely detected. "

German artist Boris Eldagsen says entry to Sony world photography awards was designed to provoke debate

A photographer is refusing a prestigious award after admitting to being a “cheeky monkey” and generating the prize-winning image using artificial intelligence.
The German artist Boris Eldagsen revealed on his website that he was not accepting the prize for the creative open category, which he won at last week’s Sony world photography awards.
The winning photograph depicted two women from different generations in black and white.
In a statement on his website, Eldagsen, who studied photography and visual arts at the Art Academy of Mainz, conceptual art and intermedia at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, and fine art at the Sarojini Naidu School of Arts and Communication in Hyderabad, said he “applied as a cheeky monkey” to find out if competitions would be prepared for AI images to enter. “They are not,” he added.
“We, the photo world, need an open discussion,” said Eldagsen. “A discussion about what we want to consider photography and what not. Is the umbrella of photography large enough to invite AI images to enter – or would this be a mistake?
“With my refusal of the award I hope to speed up this debate.”
He said this was a “historic moment” as it was the first time an AI image had won a prestigious international photography competition, adding: “How many of you knew or suspected that it was AI generated? Something about this doesn’t feel right, does it?
“AI images and photography should not compete with each other in an award like this. They are different entities. AI is not photography. Therefore I will not accept the award.”
Eldagsen suggested donating the prize to a photo festival hosted in Odesa, Ukraine.
The stunt comes at a time of intense debate over the use and implications of AI with some issuing apocalyptic warnings that the technology is on the brink of irreversibly damaging the human experience.
Recent advancements in the use of AI in chatbots, driverless cars, song-writing software and the development of pharmaceuticals has spurred the discussion. Google’s chief executive, Sundar Pichai, said concerns about AI had kept him awake at night and warned the technology can be “very harmful” if incorrectly deployed.
The Guardian has approached Creo, the art events organisers behind the competition, for comment.
American Bald Eagle - Orlando, Florida
'Christmas Day' - December 25th, 2021
*[left-click for a closer-look - large adult bald-eagle]
The Bald Eagle is both the national bird and national animal of the United States of America. The Bald Eagle appears on its Seal. In the late 20th century, it was on the brink of extirpation in the continental United States. Populations recovered and the species was removed from the U.S. federal government's list of endangered species on July 12, 1995 and transferred to the list of threatened species. It was removed from the List of Endangered and Threatened Wildlife in the Lower 48 States on June 28, 2007. The average lifespan of Bald Eagles in the wild is around 20 years, with the oldest confirmed one having been 28 years of age. Just a thrill and a joy to observe them.
I’ve been dreaming of coming to this place since last Summer. The day finally came – the dream was about to turn into reality. I felt confident we would be able to get to the top of Medicine Bow Mountain, hike the three mile long ridge, then complete the loop by meandering past the turquoise lakes strung along the base of the towering cliffs. After all, it was almost the middle of June, the weather forecast called for a sunny day - what could go wrong?
The night before Lina and I set off from Fort Collins for Wyoming, our daughter Bella tempered my enthusiasm by telling me that reaching the top of the mountain may be out of the question due to the unusually high snowfall this part of the country received this past Winter. Well, turns out she was wrong - in the wrong direction! When we got to “Snowies”, we found there was a lot more snow than we saw two days before at Loch Vale (same elevation, around 10000 feet) outside of Estes Park. We were greeted by at least two feet of the white stuff on the ground at the base of the mountain, and three times as much in some places - this barely a week from the start of the summer!
Against Lina’s objections, I soon had us heading out from the trailhead toward Lake Marie. Hey ho, hey ho! Alas, not more than a few hundred feet into our journey, we had to abandon the notion of making it around even this one lake (I did so more reluctantly than Lina, as you might imagine). Even going this “far” proved quite treacherous. Without snowshoes, we post-holed multiple times along the way, sometimes to such a depth that we had to dig each other out (post-holing is a term I didn’t know until Bella explained the concept to us after our return to Fort Collins). In spite of these struggles, this turned out to be one of one the most beautiful days in our lives, one that we (certainly I) will always remember. It was so unexpected, so magical to experience a sunny winter afternoon on the brink of Summer. This sort of stuff happens only in dreams. In Heaven.
With at the time, a bold forecast of heavy grain traffic in Canada, the decision was made to bring in reinforcements, i.e., pull power out of storage, which meant all but about half a dozen 8-40CM's were reactivated. BCOL 4604 was one of the chosen ones as it was pulled out of Homewood and put back in service. While the grain was not as heavy as expected, there has been an upturn in traffic recently that seems to have justified the revival. While it was not on grain when I saw it, it was leading the hottest eastbound train on the CN Flint Sub, Q148. With temps in the teens and winds comparable, the cold was definitely biting at my hands while the stack train flew by, but seeing a barn back from the brink, is definitely worth the cold fingers.
This key ring belongs to the Mammoetrallyteam that no longer exists. But Martin van den Brink still drives. His son is now also behind the wheel and is doing very well.
I received the key ring during one of the Dakar Preprologues. An event that no longer exists.
Participation in the rally is expensive, perhaps too expensive. No Dutch motorcycles this year, but 6 participants in the challenger class, also 6 Dutch teams participating in the cars and the classics. A disappointing list of 8 Dutch teams for the trucks. There used to be 3x as many.
The adventure is three days underway, so I can still enjoy it for a while.
I saved the photo in RAW and edited it into a photo.
Background is a photo of the Abu Dhabi desert where I was in 2019.
